why boxee is good for content owners

Page history last edited by Isidra Francis 12 years ago
  • reach more people with your content and generate more ad revenue.
    • unlock the social marketing power of your audience
      • boxee increases the value of commercialized content because recommendations, likes and ratings spread virally via built in "friend" and social features, as well through integration with existing social networks like twitter, friendfeed, tumblr etc. This exponentially increases views of commercialzed content, a unique feature of boxee as an aggregation platform.
      • The social aspects of boxee provides you with plenty of opportunities to have your content exposed and recommended to the user's social network on boxee and Twitter.
  • boxee enables content owners to create their own unique brand experiences.
  • boxee's goal is to drive users to legal sources of content

  • Reach more people with your content and generate more ad revenue.
    • provides more eye balls for ads
    • Television has always been driven by "the ratings"  - i.e. the number of eyeballs.  Those eyeballs are moving to online sources of content and online distribution gives Content Owners access to those eyeballs in a hyper-measureable format.
  • Reach viewers more frequently through multiple pathways and generate more ad revenue
    • boxee not only gets it to your audience...it gets it through your audience
    • boxee keeps your audience engaged beyond the viewing of your content
      • boxee encourages interactions with your content and other content viewers
      • your audience keeps coming back to see what others are saying about your content
    • boxee is an opportunity like no other to connect with users (how is it like no other?)
    • boxee is a distribution channel that connects you to your viewers (isn't this better placed in the what is boxee section?)
  • Deliver customized and unique brand experiences on TV
    • boxee has an API and a SDK (?? is that right (Yes!)) that allows content owners to customize the content experience in boxee
    • Your brand integrity is increased when included in Boxee
      • (well it was decreased in the case of Hulu but this can be turned around)
    • allows content owners to focus on their strategic strengths, while others focus on delivery
  • Promote access to legal sources of content
    • boxee promotes LEGAL use of media which is compatible with your values. If you fail to recognize this and choose not to list your service, people will resort to whatever means they have to in order to get their media.  This does not make them criminals but rather victims of a model where they are not being offered any alternatives.  So partnership between legal and free enterprise is the best solution for all.
    • With Boxee, if a friend watches a DVD, a torrent, or streamed content (from a legal or an illegal site), boxee will link his/her friends to legal sources of that media where content owners can earn revenue from it.
    • Advertisements are still displayed, where as if you were to get it from an illegal source, the advertisements would be cut out, therefore, there would be no revenue generated
  • Capture latent demand for accessing your content through a TV experience
    • boxee is in Alpha phase and already has a loyal following. It would not be far off to expect that millions of users could be signed on as boxee moves towards a final release. If you don't sign on now, you will be very tempted to once numbers like that are achieved but better to get in on the ground floor :-)
    • Gives you a competitive advantage and a head start on content-providers that have not openly embraced innovations in the technology space
    • boxee is one of the few aggregation platforms where users have consistently tolerated commercialized content.
    • boxee is better than television.  With the ability to show ANY Media companies content with out BLOCKING.  Or it could be used to access subscriptions services much like NETFLIX model.  boxee is NO MORE a threat to content owners than a TV that is connected to an antenna or cable.  It's a NEW way of distribution of your commercials and programming.
  • Leave your existing cost and revenue model intact
    • You maintain your advertising revenue generation + increase the value proposition for your advertisers given the wider reach
    • Adding your content to boxee requires no infrastructure change or adaptation on your site or content, integration is seamless and you still receive the video views and traffic to your site
    • Content owners can stream content and monetize it in whichever way you like.
      • boxee allows content owners to distribute their content with the monetization intact.
  • organic distribution of content to multiple channels
  • acts as an online cable network allowing users to choose content easily
  • Maintain control of the content stream
    • Allowing Boxee users stream to content [from Hulu] allows content providers to maintain control of the content stream.
    • Forcing users to find alternate ways to stream their content through boxee removes that control from content providers.
  • Don't fret over the possibility a few users will capture content
    • Historically a major concern for content providers is access and reproduction control of content.  boxee and Hulu currently do provide that control to content providers.
    • While it's possible for some advanced users to capture the content stream, if it is provided for free through boxee and Hulu and it's very easy to use and viewers are not buried in too many advertisements, then there will be no incentive to watch the pirated content instead of the official content (with commercials)
    • Preventing piracy means making your content easier to access and more convenient to the end user than the pirated content

with boxee opened up to the whole world, content owners gain access to a much larger market and one where they can tailor their monetization strategy and harness the obvious demand for good quality content.

rights-holders (content owners) in the US who currently license their content to broadcasters in foreign territories are limiting their revenue streams by not accessing content-hungry foreign users directly.

I see where you're coming from, david, but there's a reason the Hulu site is region-blocked, and you're kind of making it sound like boxee provides a work-around to that. I totally agree with you, but we need to really emphasize that the boxee experience isn't all that different from the site. Then maybe we can crusade for worldwide access; one step at a time, though.

For me, here's the bottom line: With Boxee, they've got our eyeballs. They can show us ads. With people downloading torrents, or and with people using DVRs the ads get skipped. So, you guys, you can make it easy for us to watch your shows on Boxee, or, we're going to seek the alternative.

I'd like to suggest that we don't go the 'people will otherwise steal this content' route too much. I think most non early-adopters will not.

The other problem here, is that I don't know how effective presenting the "will always link to LEGAL" media argument might be.

I also liked seeing the movements towards "netflix" model. I think statements like "facebook for video content" pack a lot of punch.

Does scaring them count as a good thing?

First, the stick:
The iPhone experience teaches that you have to get the developers on your side, otherwise, they will _make_ the platform do what they want. If Internet delivery is necessary for your growth, then developers will always find a way to script it and gain access to the content. There are more bored university students looking for their latest Heroes fix than engineers on your staff, so they will win simply by outspending you.

Then the carrot:
By making your content as widely available as possible, you are able to leverage your extensive back catalogs and create compelling viewing experiences. Through the social networking components, you are better able to sell targeted ads, making more money per viewer. Through intelligent use of P2P protocols, you could even do all of this _and_ lower your distribution costs for the popular first run shows.

Although I agree with the point:
"Just imagine If geo-restrictions could be removed, the content could reach a larger audience worldwide where there is a good following of people who cannot view content legally so they have to turn to illegal sources. This mean's WORLDWIDE distribution networks for your products."

I'm removing it because I don't believe that is the focus at the moment, and is presenting irrelevant information. I leave the quote here just in case if at anytime we choose it should be restored.

I've had a go at trying to organise some of the comments to aid clarity and group common items. My objective here was the following

a) define some high-level buckets where common themed benefits could be places
b) ensure each theme clearly states the benefit
c) not delete any suggestions, merely move them into the appropriate buckets
d) add comments to suggestions where the benefit is not clear..

Hope people find it useful.
